Montana and Canadian FlagsMontana and Canada 2006
We have spent quite a bit of time in Montana where Donna has relatives.  We were there in August 2006 and had the chance to go to Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada.  Enroute to Waterton we took the "Going to the Sun" highway in Glacier National Park.
View at Logan Pass, Montana
When we left Kalispell, Mt, the Going to the Sun highway was closed because of snowfall, but it ended in time for us to take the highway.  It was quite a sight with all the snow.  Note that this was still just September.
Glacier National Park in the U.S. and Waterton Lakes National Park in Canada together make up an International Peace Park.  When you take the boat ride in Waterton Lakes NP to the south end of the lake, you are in Glacier National Park and are met by U.S. National Park Service Rangers.  One of the pictures below shows the border between the countries.  The forest is only cut
out it this area to make the border visible from the water.
Waterton Lake and the town of Waterton Lake Waterton Lake and town 2
Here are a couple of views from the Prince of Wales Hotel toward Waterton Lake and the town of Waterton.  As you can see, the snow on the mountains was already beginning to melt.
When I was sitting in the hotel one morning having coffee and looking out the windows at the lake, a lady sitting nearby was on the phone with someone "back home" saying over and over "I'm sitting in a picture postcard"!  I can certainly agree with her!
Prince of Wales Hotel
This is the Prince of Wales Hotel.  It was built in the early 1900's and is magnificent from the outside.  The rooms were quite small, at least where we were located in the least expensive rooms.  We were on the top floor of rooms (see the little dormer windows?  That was us.)  There was no elevator to our floor, so we got to walk up that flight of stairs each time we went up.  The elevator required an operator, so we actually used it just when we checked in.  All the other times we walked up and down.
Waterton Lake Waterton Lake View
A view down the lake.  In the summer when the wind is blowing this lake is great for wind surfers.  The hotel sits far above the lake, as you could see in the previous picture, so it is truly a beautiful site when all the colored sails are moving around below you. Another view of mountains around the lake.  Taken from the boat.
Canadian border Waterton Lake
Marker for the U.S. - Canadian Border.  Taken from the boat. Another Lake View.  Just can't stop myself from showing these.
Red Rock Canyon This was taken at the Red Rock canyon area in Waterton Lakes Park.  It was well worth the drive up to it.  It was on this road the previous evening when we saw a momma bear with one cub.  Too dark to get a good picture, but it was quite a sight.

Waterton and Glacier Parks are both well worth the time and effort of getting to see them.  The Prince of Wales Hotel is pretty expensive for our taste, but just to stay there is probably worth it.  There are also hotels in the town and there are a number of good restaurants.
